Description
The jackfruit is the largest tree fruit in the world. In its native India, a single fruit can top out at over 100 pounds! But in your own backyard (and yes, it can and has been grown here) it probably won’t be anywhere near that size.
It is also deliciously sweet when ripe, the seedcoats (100-500 per fruit) tasting somewhat like a slippery banana. When green, however, they are firm and meaty and appears often in vegan dishes such as tacos.
The tree is also a vigorous grower, considered invasive in places like Brazil. But since West LA doesn’t have the coati or marmosets that spread the seed, we can consider ourselves safe.
Don’t you want to be the only person on your block with a jackfruit tree?!
